Former Patriot Latrell Alford Chosen For Semi-Pro Basketball Team

by Office of Marketing | June 25, 2013

At the end of a decorated three-year career at Valley Forge Christian College, Latrell Alford aspired to take his game to the next stage and play basketball on a professional level. Last month he was given that chance by being selected as a guard for the semi-professional Bloomington Flex basketball team located in Bloomington, Ill.

Alford originally traveled out west to play for another league team, when, at the last minute those plans fell through. Seeing the potential in Alford, the president of the Blooming Flex called and asked him to tryout for his team.  At the end of the tryout, Alford was asked to join the team.

The Bloomington Flex is part of the Independent Basketball Association - Premier Basketball League (IBA-PBL). This league is a community-owned and regionally based professional basketball league desiring to use sports to impact and transform communities. The main goal of the IBA-PBL is to empower youth through positive contact and messages while providing both players and staff a platform to build careers in professional sports.

“This experience has been great,” stated Alford, “The organization is more than just basketball. It provides me the chance to give back to the community by going into different schools in the area and connect with kids and help invest in their lives.”

As if making a semi-professional team was not exciting enough, Alford's team went on to defeat the Rochester RazorSharks on June 9, winning the championship game. With their 88-77 defeat at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY, they became the Premier Basketball League champions.

This experience is only getting Alford more enthusiastic about his future. Given the opportunity to network and develop his skills further, Alford aims to continue looking for opportunities to play basketball overseas.

“This door has been opened for me by God and has given me the chance to get my foot in the door,” Alford explained. “It is truly humbling to play with these experienced players and learn from them. It has given me the chance to grow more as a basketball player and man of God. It has really opened my eyes to what happens when you stay the course, work hard and trust God!”
