Dr. P. Douglas Chapman presented an academic paper on Thomas King Leonard, one of the founders of the Assemblies of God (AG), at the Society for Pentecostal Studies 43rd Annual Meeting (SPS) on March 6, 2014, at Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.

The SPS Meeting theme was “Hermeneutics and the Spirit: Identities, Communities and the Making of Meaning.” Men and women gathered for the opportunity to discuss this theme and learn from fellow scholars.

Dr. Chapman’s paper, “Thomas King Leonard: A Truly Indispensable Man,” is a historical tribute to the ministry work of Pastor T. K. Leonard and the legacy he built for the AG that continues today. T. K. Leonard established Pentecostal churches, gave the AG its name, opened a Bible school and founded Gospel Publishing House.

Leonard’s personal life and ministry are worthy examples of unwavering trust to the body of God. Leonard and his church relied on faith and God for his ministry and daily provisions even in times of distress. The result was a fruitful ministry that spread nationally and around the world. Dr. Chapman sees the value in learning from past leaders. He stated, “Their level of trust in God, their dependence upon Him, can serve all of us as an example of the need to live by faith and walk by faith and not by sight.”

Dr. Chapman and T. K. Leonard share a strong commitment of equipping men and women for ministry. Dr. Chapman models Ephesians 4:11-12 as he prepares disciples to fulfill God’s callings for their lives. He has spent over 15 years of his ministry in higher education, teaching and disciplining men and women to “help advance the Kingdom of God.”

Dr. Chapman is an adjunct professor at the Valley Forge Christian College Woodbridge campus. He is also the family care pastor at Chapel Springs Church in Bristow, Va.

An abridged version of Dr. Chapman’s paper will be published in the summer issue of the Assemblies of God Heritage magazine. The papers presented at the meeting can also be purchased on a CD at the SPS website.
